Located eleven miles north of Lubbock on Interstate 27, New Deal began when the railroad track was laid from Plainview to Lubbock in 1909. Originally named "Monroe" after an early Santa Fee Railroad promoter by the name of Monroe G. Abernathy, it was later renamed New Deal after Franklin D. Roosevelt's programs.
