A Santa Fe Railroad transaction lead to the creation of the town of Slaton in April 1911 and it "opened for business" in June 1911. The town was set up to serve as a division point to service trains traveling through northwest Texas. Nowadays a strong agriculture community that primarily produces cotton and grain is the backbone of the Slaton economy. Slaton is located 17 miles southeast of Lubbock.
